New South Wales: How to grow big tomatoes

Last week we heard about the launch of the Upper Hunter Vegetable Festival that will be taking place next January. It got us thinking, how do you grow big and juicy tomatoes? The kind of tomato that would say, win…

Why on earth would Bruce, an artist and big fan of staying indoors on hot summer days, want to grow tomatoes? The answer was as good as any, “I just want to”. And so off I went to the nurseries. I looked at all the different kinds of …

Every summer I grow tomatoes in my garden, as well as a variety of herbs and other veggies. I also compost for fertilizer in my garden, that gets old tomatoes and their seeds in the mix. So, when I plant four tomato plants in the spring …

There are three major issues that you should know to get the most out of your tomato plants. Growing tomatoes is easy, but a little planning ahead of time ensures that your tomatoes will be disease-free, plump, juicy and prolific. Here are three tomato growing tips to begin your gardening journey:

1. Choose the best location – Tomatoes love sun, so the location you choose should be sunny, whether it’s a spot in your outdoor garden or a container on the patio. You must have a minimum of 6 hours sunlight for your tomatoes to produce their fruit.

2. Nutrients and water consumption – Your tomato plants must have the proper nutrients and the right amount of water to produce the fresh-tasting and fruit-bearing results you want. Before you plant the tomatoes, work the soil with a compost or fertilizer to create a rich venue for your seedlings. Periodically give your plants a lift with a fertilizer – used coffee grounds placed around the base of the plants will also help.

Your tomato plants are thirsty little creatures when they’re growing, so it’s important that you water them frequently. Don’t let the soil dry out and then deluge the tomato plants with water. Consider a drip water system to ensure that the plants receive water on a timely basis. A great tip for do-it-yourself gardeners is to wash out gallon milk jugs, pierce the sides and bottom with holes, and then bury them in the soil between your tomato plants with only the top sticking out of the ground. Fill the jugs with water and they’ll release it as the soil dries out, ensuring that the plants are watered deeply.

3. Stake or cage your tomato plants – Tomatoes are vines and must be kept from growing across the ground, leaving them susceptible to disease or fungus, so be sure to stake your plants early on. Some people prefer cages that you can purchase at any garden store. Staking your tomato plants while they’re young will also prevent disturbing their root formation later on.

These are the three main tips to get started growing tomato plants. But, you must also be diligent in pruning dead leaves and branches and harvest the tomatoes when they’re ripe and ready to eat.

If you have a problem, there’s plenty of information online or in helpful books that will address some of the roadblocks you may come across when growing tomatoes. Be patient and soon you’ll have the fresh, sun-ripened taste of tomatoes on your table.

Growing tomatoes isn’t just fun – it’s downright rewarding and delicious. When you know what your tomatoes need to grow and you are picking bucket-loads of them you will be the envy of your neighborhood.

Start the backyard revolution today and discover how to grow the most mouth-watering tomatoes you have ever eaten.

Planning A Vegetable Garden

Here’s all you need to know about starting your first home vegetable garden. Regardless of where one lives, growing conditions are bound to be different from the conditions described in most Gardening books. To plan a successful Garden, ask some questions. Which vegetables grow well in this area? What soil types are common? Are there unique conditions in the Garden to consider, for example, high winds, compacted soils, poor drainage and wet spots? Finally, what are the first and last frost dates and the growing season? Later as skills develop add more difficult Crops such as small fruits and perennial vegetables, and add more area to the Garden’s size. When selecting plants of a first garden, keep in mind several suggestions. So before I even get started the garden is already divided into four equal quadrants that are easy to identify and keep separated.

When planning the layout of the vegetable beds there are four main considerations that I keep in mind to guide my planting and growing strategy. If you plant a particular crop or family of related crops in one raised bed the previous year, it goes in a different area or garden bed the next time around. A very important consideration when planning your vegetable garden is to think about the size, height, and growth habit of the crops and to plant according to these characteristics. Getting this right will enable you to employ succession planting techniques to grow two or three separate harvests in the same space that many gardeners grow a single vegetable crop. When the bulbs are harvested in mid summer the bed can then be used to plant fall crops such as kale, mustard greens, cabbage, broccoli, and other cool weather vegetables and planning ahead the same area can be used to grow tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants can be replanted with your crop of fall garlic. In September after the tomatoes have slowed production, pull the vines, add a layer of compost to the bed and use the area to plant garlic to over-winter, or sow transplants of other fall and winter vegetables. There are many unique vegetable varieties available that are not only tasty, but can also add an ornamental flavor to the vegetable garden with their unusual shapes, textures, and colors. There are several factors to consider when planning what will be grown in the vegetable garden. Growing from seed gardeners should consider whether th
ey are willing and able to grow any of their plants from seed under fluorescent lights. In cooler climates, starting seeds indoors helps to extend the growing season and provides the gardener with more control over what specific varieties of tomatoes, peppers, beans and other vegetables will be cultivated. When planning the vegetable garden, decide which plants will be grown from seed, and which plants will be purchased as seedlings. Gardeners who grow vegetables may also enjoy growing fruit in the garden. Planting a fruit tree such as apple, pear or cherry is also a satisfying addition to the vegetable garden.

Gardeners tend to neglect the plants they don’t like to eat. To avoid being wasteful, gardeners should grow only those edible plants that are regularly eaten in their household. Although most vegetable plants grow in varying shades of green, some heirloom vegetables grow in a wide variety of colors. Incorporating edible flowers such as nasturtiums or violas also adds a touch of color to the vegetable garden. When planning the next seasons vegetable patch, gardeners will also need to consider the time and energy they have available to spend working to maintain the garden, as well as any storage space required once the baskets of fruit and vegetables begin to be harvested. Sunlight full sun is the preferred exposure for growing most vegetables. Install your beds away from trees or other objects that could shade the garden. Remember that trees are plants too and locating garden beds too close to tree roots will place your vegetables in competition with trees for water and nutrients. Windbreaks trees, fences, walls, even hedges can be used to protect young plants, as long as they are far enough away from your garden not to cause shade or competition problems. The size of your garden depends on the vegetable needs and wants of you and your family, what land is available to you, water requirements, and how hard your want to work at it. Many people enthusiastically plant gardens larger than their needs and their abilities to care for them, and then realize, late into the season, that their vegetable garden has just gotten away from them. Spinach, radishes, leaf lettuce and other like vegetables need relatively little space. There are new bush varieties that are constantly being developed for these types of plants that can be used in small gardens. Placement if you are planting corn in your garden, plant it on the north side, so it wont shade other plants as it grows taller. Map your garden when your deciding what goes where, so next year, you can rotate some crops. Successful garden all deepens on you and your planning so get started on your new garden.

Growing tomato plants indoors in the winter season?

I've just planted a few tomato plants which may not be fruiting by the time it frosts here. I'm also planting carnival blend carrots and sage, possibly basil. I would like to keep them growing through fall/winter.

Who can resist a juicy, tangy tomato, fresh from the garden? Just smelling that pungent aroma of sun-ripened tomatoes or thinking about how they’re going to taste makes you drool. Besides all the great dishes you can create with tomatoes, they’re a fantastic accompaniment to any meal.

If you’re tired of supermarket tomatoes that don’t taste anything like past memories –it may be time to grow your own. Growing tomatoes has never been easier. Even if you only have a vacant window-space or a spare pot on your patio, you can grow tomatoes that will tantalize your taste buds – not to mention the satisfaction you feel when you nurture those tomatoes from baby seedlings and then pick them straight from the vine.

Begin your tomato growing odyssey by choosing seedlings that are disease-resistant and plant them after all chances of frost has passed. Choose an area that gets full sunlight, proper drainage and protection from wind. Be sure the soil is organically rich before you dig – then remove the bottom leaves from your tomato seedlings and plant them in the soil so that it covers the removed leave’s spots. Stake your tomato plants to minimize root damage and then water thoroughly (without wetting the plant’s leaves).

Now that your tomato seedlings are planted, you’re ready to nurture them into healthy plants that will produce the best tomatoes you’ve ever tasted. Here are some tomato growing tips that will help you avoid the common problems of growing tomatoes:

•	Water regularly and early at the base of the tomato plants while they’re in their early stages (trickle irrigation is a good way to ensure your tomato plants are getting enough, but not too much, water.

•	Periodically investigate your tomato plants for disease and prune those dead or dying leaves regularly.

•	Avoid Blossom End Rot (brown rot on the bottom of the tomatoes that turns black in time) on your tomato plants by watering on a regular basis so the soil doesn’t dry out – but don’t over water. If it rains for several days in a row, use mulch to deter the drenched effect.

•	Avoid Early Blight (a fungal disease) by making sure the soil doesn’t retain high levels of water. If you do see your tomato leaves turning yellow, then brown and falling off the plant – remove it from the others as soon as possible.

Soon, you’ll be benefiting from the fruits of your efforts by enjoying your tomato harvest in soups, sauces, omelets or simply as a side dish to a delectable meal.

Growing tomatoes isn’t just fun – it’s downright rewarding and delicious. When you know what your tomatoes need to grow and you are picking bucket-loads of them you will be the envy of your neighborhood.
My tomato plants have a problem – help!?

My tomato seedlings have been growing in my vegetable patch for a month. They have got quite big but the leaves on one of them started to turn brown and curl up. This problem has been slowly spreading and now four of the plants have a significant number of brown looking curling leaves which are dying. The plants were fertilized when I planted them (in soil enriched with soil from my chicken coup) and have been regularly watered. Can anybody help me with this? I am in competition with my father-in-law to produce the first tomato of the season!

Is it possible to grow cherry tomatoes from fresh cherry tomato seed?

Yes, you just put the seeds on a paper towel to dry. After they dry roll or fold it up and put it in a freezer bag and put in the freezer. In April or May take it out of the freezer and put onto damp soil in a flower pot, cover lightly with soil, keep moist, not wet just moist and they will germinate and you can, when they get big enough, place in pots then when big enough in the garden or planter.

Ok so you might find the next few links interesting. These are from around the web, just random snippets that I’ve picked up in my reading, but I found some very cool information in them. You might too. Here goes…

How to Grow Perfect Juicy Tomatoes

We were shocked when we read what some of our competitor's tomato growing guides said to do. Besides being inconsistent and full of fluff, they actually told you to do the wrong things to grow tomatoes. One tomato guide even said that …

Refugees United Blog » Blog Archive » » Refugees from Burma grow …

Tau Tau picks tomatoes on a piece of land at Geyssens Nursery in Greece, where a few acres have been set aside for immigrants to grow vegetables. Tau Tau is from Myanmar, where he was forced from his home to a refugee camp. …

Tips for Growing Tomatoes | Agriculture Guide – For All of Your …

According to the US Department of Agriculture, tomatoes are the most popular home-grown vegetable in the country. Here are some tips that will help you grow.

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

There is nothing better than the taste of a fresh from the vine tomato sandwich.

This year I added two new (for me) tomato plants to my garden. I tried growing heirloom tomatoes. I purchased a Purple Cherokee and a Black Kril, both heirloom varieties.

In the past, I have grown Celebrity tomatoes with varying degrees of success. The less than satisfactory success rate might be due to the drought we experienced here on the East Coast the past two years. I found the tomatoes I grew last summer to be pithy and lacking flavor.

The Purple Cherokee and the Black Kril tomato seedlings grew to become tremendous plants. I planted both plants inside tall tomato cages and inserted additional stakes into the ground to keep the heavy plants standing upright. Both plants produced large fruits, which ripened to a different color of red than the familiar traditional tomatoes. The Black Kril’s fruit was a dark red, almost black on the edges while the Purple Cherokee’s fruit was not as dark. Both tomatoes tasted fresh with strong tomato taste.

To prepare the soil, I used a posthole digger to dig deep enough to bury the plant six inches in the ground. I removed the bottom leaves before inserting into the hole filled with organic compost, a handful each of lime, Epson salts, and 10-10-10 fertilizer. My secret ingredient is to add one book of matches minus the cover. After tamping down the soil around the newly planted tomato plant, I water well with rainwater collected in my rain barrels.

Each plant produced 15-20 large fruits, which made it to the table. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm with strong winds and heavy rain flattened both heavily fruited plants to the ground, breaking the main stems in the process. I up- righted the plants after the storm, but the plants suffered too much and slowly succumbed. The largest fruits ripened which I brought into the house. I removed the dying plants to make room for late season additions to the garden.

I did not find any advantages or disadvantages in growing heirloom tomatoes over the newer varieties of tomatoes. Tomato plant variety selection should be based on the ultimate purpose for growing. I grow tomatoes to eat; therefore, I want flavorful, fresh tomatoes. Both of the heirloom tomatoes I grew this summer, the Purple Cherokee and the Black Kril, met my requirements for candidates in next year’s garden.

How do I make my tomato seedlings grow quicker?

Oh so many questions..

I guess the short of it is, I didn't give them enough light. They're 3 weeks old and still only have baby leaves. The season is progressing fast (Central Victoria), so I need to put them on steroids or something to get a crop this year.

Should I leave them in the sun all day now (I can move them around to different spots if need be). Inside or outside during the day?

Should I ditch the re-potting bizzo and just put them in the garden and bury them deep when they have 2 sets of true leaves? Or still re-pot?

Thanks very much!

Everybody has vegetables listed in their diet. Vegetables are healthy and should be eaten regularly. It is nice to grow vegetables by yourself and eat them. But the question arises as to how to grow vegetables. We shall further see some tips and hints on how to grow vegetables.

If you are thinking on how to grow vegetables in the house then it is not very difficult. Growing vegetables requires a lot of sunlight. So it is necessary to see that your garden does get sufficient sunlight. Start from the spring season. It is always better to have a vegetable garden close to the kitchen. This way you have easy access into the garden that would provide faster cooking. The seeds need to be soaked and require moisture. Once they are a little plump they are ready to be grown. Some vegetables like cabbage and broccoli do not require you to soak their seeds. Over doing the soaking the process could cause harm to the seeds. Do not leave them overnight.

Thinking of how to grow vegetables in the cold then you will have to utilize tepees that are filled with water around the vegetables that are gentle. There are certain plastic sheets that are available in the market which acts as a barrier to the plant once water is filled. Sun can also easily pass through this sheet so that the plants stay warm later.

Wondering how to grow vegetables that are leggy then, you should be planting them deep inside. If you have planted them inside the house then they may grow a little awkward and tumble in the garden. So if it is more deeply sown then they get more support. Tomatoes require to be planted horizontally in the trench. This is not necessary to be sown deep in the soil. It would grow well without it itself.

Try to avoid cutworms that spoil gentle and tender plants. When planting vegetable plants always try to put them vertically, this would save some place. Vegetables like cucumber, beans, melons etc. can be left to go on trees or pillars rather than spreading them across. All the vegetables require fertilizers timely. So do take care that you take good care of them. This would ensure that they keep giving vegetables at regular intervals.

Cucumbers and melons can easily grow in compost. Any kind of remaining food and fruits can be thrown into them. They would act as manure and see that the vegetable grows well. This is the best way to grow such vegetables.

Potted Vegetable Garden

Potted vegetable gardening can be easy and fun for kids and adults. Container vegetable gardens can be grown in almost any sunny location. A well-planned start and diligent maintenance will allow your container vegetable garden to flourish. Follow these tips for successful container vegetable gardening. I will include container garden ideas and container garden designs.

1. Use large containers. When designing a container vegetable garden, the size of the pot should match the size of the plant. The more root space a plant has, the better it will grow. For large plants like tomatoes and squash, a half whiskey barrel pot is ideal. For plants that are root bound in their growing pot, it is often necessary to tease out the roots to ensure new growth.

2. Use compost. Compost is the best stuff for plants and helps keep them cool and moist. Add 1 part compost to 3 parts potting mix. Place mulch on top to help retain moisture. Fertilize the plants frequently, but not everyday. Use clear water, too, to flush away unused fertilizer.

3. Enough sun. Make sure your vegetables get at least 6 hours of sunlight to produce fruit well. Lettuce and herbs will do well with 3-4 hours of sun. Place container in a location that meets the needs of the plant.

4. No sitting in water. Trays under the pots are dangerous and can drown the roots of your plants. Empty them out frequently and after each rain. Make sure your pots have good drain holes. Use a wide screen to cover the drainage holes to keep material from leaking out.

Potted vegetable gardening requires frequent watering and feeding. It is essential in potted vegetable gardening to set up the container properly. For planting vegetables you need 18-24 inches diameter for each plant, including tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, and squash. Plant these first, then you can add smaller plants like carrots, radishes, lettuce, and herbs to fill in a large container. Large plants need to be caged or staked for support. Once the container is set up, maintenance is the next important step in container vegetable gardening. It is very important to water your plants regularly. If the soil is dry 2-3 inches down, water until the water runs out of the bottom of the pot. Growing vegetables in pots is fun and easy. The satisfaction you will feel with your harvest is well worth the wa

Growing with bamboo – Yahoo! India News

It's been a productive year for Sikkim. It got less than its share of rain compared to the annual average of 4,000 mm but its production of tomatoes, flowers and vegetables went up by 25 per cent. And the credit for it all goes to a technique developed by a Pune engineer that uses bamboo instead of steel rods to build polyhouses.

Developed by Rajesh Edke, the concept has reduced the cost of construction by over 60 per cent, making the polyhouse an affordable setup for farmers. The Sikkim government has constructed 1,620 polyhouses in the northeastern parts of the state and plans to set up over 40,000 in the long run.

“Farming in Sikkim is rainfall-dependent. Only 15 per cent of the total area of the state is agricultural land. On 25 hectares, we have constructed 1,620 polyhouses at a cost of Rs 31,000 per polyhouse. The advantage of the bamboo polyhouse is that it protects the crop from rough weather and accumulates carbon dioxide generated by the plants, which they recycle for growth. This increases production by almost 25 per cent. We also harvested the water that came down the polyhouse roofs, so we wouldn't suffer despite the scanty rainfall in the state,” says Ravindra Telang, former secretary, Department of Agriculture, Sikkim.

“With an area of 250 sq m, each of these polyhouses can generate an annual income of Rs 80,000 to Rs 1,00,000 for the farmer. After the implementation of the initial phase was successful, we now plan to provide bamboo polyhouses to over 40,000 families that do farming above an altitude of 3,500-4,000-m,” says K.K. Singh, Director, Horticulture, Sikkim.

Having patented the technique in India in 2008, Edke was approached by the National Bamboo Mission to construct over 1,500 polyhouses in Sikkim's northeastern regions. “Conventional polyhouses are constructed using steel rods that not only make the structure bulky, but also increases the cost of production. For instance, the cost of a steel rod is Rs 900 per meter whereas that of bamboo is just Rs 300. Bamboo is an agricultural product and its flexibility is well known. Being organic, it absorbs lesser heat compared to steel rods and creates an ideal atmosphere for the plants to grow. And it is available locally, which cuts down the transportation cost and creates a market for local bamboo producers,” says Edke, who has now applied for a patent of the technique in China.

Tarot cards are fun, entertaining and are great for helping us to find direction to solve our problems. If you want to learn how to read tarot cards, the first thing you need to do is to buy a deck. Sometimes, a used deck is good, but only if it has come from an advanced reader or from someone that you know and trust. Most people will tend to go out and buy a brand new deck, however.

When you are searching for your deck, take a close look at the cards and the illustrations on them. Quite often, a deck will magically “speak” to you, signifying that it is the deck for you. The only two other things you are going to need are a notebook for writing down questions and reading results, and a nice, handy pencil or pen.

To get started, clear out a clean space inside your home free of clutter and distractions. Have a radio by your side to play soft music in order to enhance readings and concentration. You do not always have to listen to music; however, some people prefer to perform their readings in complete silence that is fine. Just choose whatever works for you and your concentration level the best. In order to enhance concentration even more, try lighting a candle or two near you while you are doing your readings.

Here is the order of steps in which to follow once you have gotten your deck out and ready to use:

1) Once you have taken your deck out of the box, separate the Minor Arcana cards from the Major Arcana cards.

2) Some people may choose to flip one portion of the deck upside down while leaving the other right side up, although, this is optional.

3) Shuffle your deck thoroughly at least 5 times. This will allow you to touch every single card at least once and spread your energies over the cards.

4) Once you have asked your question, you may want to try the simple spread. This consists of 4 cards in a diamond shape, it is usually best for beginners, and still provides accurate answers.

5) If you are letting someone else ask the question, you may want to let them cut the deck and choose the cards, although this is also optional.

6) The Minor Arcana cards will suggest the strongest messages while the Major Arcana may seemingly represent background influences.

7) If you choose to turn some of the deck upside down, it can change the meanings. For example, say that the “soul mates” card has been chosen and it is turned upside down, this might possibly mean that your soul mate is being blocked off by some other influence.

Go with the flow during your readings, if a card pops up that does not make sense; try to imagine what it might possibly mean. Most of the time, your initial instinct is the right one.

Now that you know how to perform a tarot card reading, make sure that you store your deck away in a safe place after readings. You may use a soft cloth to wrap the cards up in, making sure that they do not pick up any negative energy. Keep them hidden if you live with other people, if someone else touches them that you do not allow to, they could potentially affect them and bring different energies to them. This is not good because it could affect your readings in a bad way. All together, learning to read tarot cards is easy and fun. Anyone can learn how to read tarot cards if they are willing to learn. Good luck!

Wisconsin chef teaches cooking in forests, fields – Yahoo! News

WEST BEND, Wis. – As more travelers show an interest in local cuisines, a Milwaukee chef is taking the trend a bit further with a cooking school that travels to the food’s origins.

The Braise Culinary School holds classes on farms and in forests during warm months. Most classes start with a farm tour — or recently, a walk in the woods — so students can see how food grows before they learn to prepare it.

“The idea, basically, is to reconnect people to their food,” chef and owner David Swanson said.

He came up with the idea while working on a business plan for a restaurant and attached cooking school.

“One question that I would think that would come up is: ‘Where is this food coming from?’” Swanson said. From there, it was a short jump to offering classes — sometimes literally — in the field.

Swanson, 39, worked in restaurants in the Chicago area and Milwaukee for about 20 years before opening the cooking school in 2006. Since then, he has cooked in apple orchards, wheat fields and breweries. This year’s first class began with a mushroom hunt in woods near the University of Wisconsin-Washington County.

Swanson partnered on the class with Britt Bunyard, a mycologist and editor of Fungi magazine. Bunyard led about two dozen people through woods and clearings he had scouted the day before.

“There’s no need to run from spot to spot,” Bunyard said: Dozens of morels were waiting to be picked.

Gail Groenwoldt, 39, of Milwaukee, signed up for the hunt after seeing morels priced at nearly $50 a pound in her grocery store. During the hunt, she also spotted ramps. A side order of the onion-like plant cost her more than $20 in a Milwaukee restaurant.

“This is why we should learn to forage,” Groenwoldt said.

After the hunt, Swanson sauteed morels, ramps, asparagus and potatoes and then added veal stock to make a vegetable ragout. The cooking lesson, Groenwoldt said, was “a treat.”

Sara Wong, 33, also from Milwaukee, has taken Indian, sushi and Thai cooking classes. On a trip to Vietnam, she ate dog.

“I’ll try just about anything,” Wong said. She learned about Swanson’s school at a community supported agriculture, or CSA, fair. “I like unique experiences in food, so I thought this would be fun.”

Many of Swanson’s classes are taught on CSA farms. The farmers sell shares of their crop in the spring, often for $500 or $600, and then deliver boxes of produce weekly during the growing season.

Typically, about a third of Swanson’s students are CSA members eager to learn how to prepare the food they’re receiving. Others are foodies, and some just want a new experience.

“The farmer will talk about what they’re growing, what their practices are,” Swanson said. “People will ask questions about what they are growing in their garden, how it pertains to them.”

He varies the menu to reflect the season and the farms’ specialties. A previous class at Pinehold Gardens, just outside Milwaukee, featured garlic, greens and fingerling potatoes. This year’s class will be in August and focus on heirloom tomatoes.

Swanson also plans classes at a creamery near Madison and a wheat field on Washington Island in Lake Michigan. On the Washington Island trip last year, he showcased the wheat with a panzanella salad made with wheat bread, cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, olives and feta and scones made with granola from the hotel where students stayed. He also used locally-made Death’s Door Vodka to create vodka-braced strawberries with cream fraiche.

It was a great adventure, hauling cooking materials into the field in an old pick up truck, Swanson said. But, “wheat is just beautiful, just looking at the wheat in the wind is nice.”

For those more interested in eating than cooking, Swanson hosts a series of Sunday dinners at farms. Guests receive quick tours of greenhouses or strawberry patches before settling down to meals that may include roasted chicken, strawberry shortcake or grilled summer squash.

Dress is casual, and “the big thing,” Swanson said, is “breaking the bread, talking with the farmer about the things they are growing.”

In all cases, he tries to keep the food simple so students or dinner guests can make similar meals at home.

“The idea is to get more people to cook,” Swanson said, “and if they make the connection to the farmer, some of the best meals I’ve had are simple meals.”

Starting A Vegetable Garden From Scratch

We live in an age of convenience.
8 minute microwave meals have replaced the hours it took to prepare a home cooked meal. Veggies come peeled and seasoned; all you need to do is pop them in the cooker and innovative easy meals line the shelves of our supermarket aisles.

Yes, convenience is king in the 21st century. We also, however, live in an age where we are hyper aware of what’s getting added to our foods – organic is in!

While it may be easier to pop a packet of peeled baby carrots in a lemon butter sauce into the microwave, there is something so rewarding about growing and preparing your veggies from scratch. Not only are you completely confident that no horrible pesticides have been used but the feeling of accomplishment of going back to the earth is so satisfying – and rather impressive in the eyes of your dinner guests too.

Now, while starting your own vegetable garden may sound a little too Alan Titchmarsh for you, you’d be surprised how easy it actually is. Not only will you acquire a gratifying new hobby, but you will also be saving money and ensuring that you are in complete control of what you are putting into your body.

Deciding to start a vegetable garden is a no-brainer. It’s preparing for planting, selecting your veggies and the maintenance that scares off most people. All you really need to do is follow these steps and in a few short weeks you will be reaping the benefits.

Step One: Where to place your veggie garden

Think about your garden carefully before you haul out the spades and rakes. Make sure that you consider the children’s play areas, where the wind hits the hardest and where the sunniest parts of your garden are located – most vegetables thrive when they are exposed to 6 hours of full sunlight a day.
Once you’ve decided where the ideal place for your veggie garden is, you can decide on how big or small it can be. If you have a really small garden or a paved outside area you can grow some vegetables in pots and troughs.

Step Two: Preparing the garden
Mark out the area for your vegetable patch and get started. You can add some finishing touches, like paving or fencing, to make it look prettier once the initial steps are complete.
You will need to remove all weeds, stones, roots and debri
1000
s from the area by churning the soil. Once you are happy with that you’ll need to prepare the soil – arguably the most vital step in the process.

Step Three: Preparing the soil
Key to the success of your veggie garden is rich, fertile, well draining soil. If you already have that, this is going to be really easy. If, however, your garden rarely breeds anything other than weeds, it may take a little longer to get the soil in this part of your garden up to scratch.
Adding 6 to 8 centimetres of compost or rotten leaves, if you have them available, in spring will help improve both the fertility and drainage of the soil.
The ideal pH for vegetables is 6.0 to 6.5 and you’ll be able to get a testing kit from your local gardening store. You may also want to test your soil and then head off to chat to one of the experts at the garden store. They will be able to advise you on what you need to add to the soil in order to improve its quality – after a few months you’ll be an expert too. Once your soil is in tip top condition (this may take a few weeks depending on the condition of your base soil) – the fun can really start.
Starting a compost heap is also a wonderful idea. That way you can ensure that any organic matter goes straight back into your veggie garden.

Step Four: Choosing your vegetables
The variety of vegetables you’ll be able to plant really depends on the size of your veggie patch as well as the demand for those specific vegetables in your home. It’s no good to grow a hundred heads of lettuce if you’re the only one in the house eating it.
It’s probably best to start with a few vegetables that are renowned for being easy to grow: carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, spinach and celery.
Some vegetables thrive in soil of a specific pH level, so your expert at the garden centre will be able to tell you exactly what will grow best in your new garden.

Step Five: Planting your vegetables
It is important that you follow the instructions on your seed packs to the letter. Plant them at the exact depth and space apart as stated and make sure you mark the various veggies. You will need to cover the seeds and then firmly compact the soil. Follow up with thorough yet soft shower from the hosepipe.

Step Six: Caring for your veggie garden
Vegetables need approximately 3 – 5 centimetres of water a week, but remember to keep the showers light – the seedlings will still be quite fragile for a while. Remember not to water during the hours where your bed is exposed to full sunlight as it will cause your plants to burn – early morning and early evening are the best times for watering your vegetable garden.
After a few weeks you will see the seedlings coming up to the surface – if you notice that you may have placed too many in your bed or that they are going to start encroaching on one another, now is the best time to thin your bed down.
You also need to ensure that you are weeding and maintaining the bed weekly.

Step Seven: Protecting your veggies
One of the biggest concerns for gardeners is the insects and creatures like snails that attack their plants. Keep an eye out for them; it’s easier to put a stop to this problem if you catch it early. Tedious, but definitely the best way of avoiding pests, is to pick them off of your plants by hand – it’s also chemical free.

If you do wish to use pesticides, make sure they are organic. There are also several that you can create yourself – a quick search for “make your own organic pesticide” on the internet will reveal a variety of solutions you can create to keep the bugs at bay. Again, if in doubt, please consult the staff at your local garden centre.

Step Eight: Reaping the rewards
Once your veggies are ready to harvest you can remove from the soil as needed or prepare home-grown veggie baskets as gifts for you friends and family. Remember not to over cook fresh veggies – you will be amazed at the difference in tas
1000
te from store bought products.

Another great idea is to harvest some of the additional vegetables and donate them to a charity in your area, be it a soup kitchen or a school feeding scheme.

Happy gardening!

Flux Family Secrets: The Ripple Effect is a hidden object game that experiments a little with the genre. In this game, you will find hidden objects, puzzles, adventure and even a few history lessons! In Flux Family Secrets, you play the role of someone who does not know their past and are actively seeking it out. A mysterious family contacts you and sends you on an adventure of a lifetime. Using a time travel device, you get to go back in time and solve historical puzzles.

The story begins with the mysterious Flux family welcoming you into their home and presenting you with a few puzzles to prove your worth. You then discover that the family has a time travel device that they use to repair damage caused by time Ripples. You then get involved helping them realign history, going back in time and solving puzzles and obtaining artifacts in the various categories such as art, music and flight.

The gameplay in Flux Family Secrets is refreshing as well. Rather than searching each scene for a shopping list of hidden objects, everything you search for in this game has a purpose. You are required to find parts of items that have been broken up into a few pieces. Once the items are assembled, you will need to either place them back into the scene where they belong, or get them to interact with some other object in the scene to progress or activate a puzzle.

The puzzles in the game are plentiful and well spread-out throughout the game so that you don’t get bored with constantly looking for hidden objects. The puzzles aren’t too complex, but there are many of them and they are pretty well thought out. You get to solve cryptex puzzles, safe-cracking, arrangement puzzles and even a couple of arcade-style minigames.

When you get to the time travel bits of the game, you will find that the hidden objects and puzzles aren’t very straight-forward at all. In every “category” that you go back to fix (such as Art or Music), you will be presented with 3 scenes featuring 3 masters in their craft. The objects and puzzles in the 3 scenes are interconnected. You will need to solve puzzles in one scene in order to unlock puzzles and objects in a different scene. This adds a new dimension to the game, requiring you to keep hopping between scenes.

The game also adds a nice “history lesson” angle that makes it educational as well. The game will give you a brief description of Da Vinci and the Mona Lisa when you encounter them in the Art scenario. Similarly, you will learn more about the origin of flight and the Wright brothers when you encounter that scene in the Flight scenario.

The graphics and music are above average in this game. The art style and soundtrack are different for each scene and reflect the styles prevalent in those historical periods. In all, Flux Family Secrets is a game that tries to blend in features from the hidden object, puzzle, adventure and mystery genres and succeeds at doing so.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

I hope you’ve been enjoying my posts lately. I thought I might do something different today and rustle up a few bits of info from around the WWW. These are some of the news items and blog posts that have been popular over the last few weeks. Leave me your thoughts.

I'm not sure if other farmers in the area also grow the same varietal. Happy eating! The tomato season is just about over now. I hope the weather's better next year for a more bountiful harvest (which will lead to lower prices!). …

I also heard someone say the other day that 'if a person can't grow tomatoes this year, then they can't grow them at all.' It makes me wish that I had planted some at the beginning of the year. Knowing me, if I try to grow them next …

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I did and please if you have something to say, use the comments form below to let everyone know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

When growing tomatoes, choosing the variety is important. You need to decide what characteristics are the most important to you, as well as the climate and disease susceptibility in your area. No one variety will perform best across all planting seasons and regions. Issues such as fruit firmness, size, shape, flavour and plant growing habits need to be considered.

You also need to decide whether you want a ‘jointed’ tomato variety or not. In other words, do you want a tomato variety that retains its stalk when picked or one that comes away cleanly from its stalk when picked. Many commercial organic and gourmet tomato growers choose ‘jointed’ tomato varieties because the tomato with its stalk attached looks attractive to the buyer. However, most home gardeners and non-organic commercial growers choose ‘jointless’ varieties.

The next choice is whether you want a ‘determinate’ or ‘indeterminate’ variety. A determinate variety grows to a bush about 1 metre (3 feet) high. At this stage it stops growing and sets a concentrated crop of tomatoes which can be picked over a few weeks.

Indeterminate varieties keep growing and can reach a height of up to 5 metres (15 or more feet) when fully mature. The fruit from these can be picked over a period of 12 to 20 weeks. These varieties are frequently used by greenhouse producers. Many cherry tomato varieties are indeterminate.

There are also ‘semi-determinate’ varieties which grow to about 1.5 – 2 metres (4 – 6 ft) and set fruit over a longer period than determinate varieties. These are the best suited to home gardens. They generally require staking and the tomatoes are harvested over 2 – 6 weeks.
